Chapter 15
As she drove home, Kate thought about Faith. She was concerned about her. She’d not seen her in almost three days. Her bedroom door was closed when she walked by in the morning and again when she came home at night. She didn’t hear a sound beyond it and began to wonder if she was even at home until she spotted Faith’s cane by the front entrance. Eating and spending time alone in the evening didn’t bother her. She’d sure done it enough when she lived with Trish. It gave her time to think. But admittedly, she missed Faith.
She’d tried calling her a couple times, but it just went to Faith’s voicemail. Was she avoiding her on purpose? Was she trying to avoid her? Kate knew she’d been up and around because there were dishes in the sink and laundry in the dryer. But she just couldn’t figure out why Faith was completely absent.
The dogs sat up in back, already anticipating the turn into the driveway and the bowls of kibble that followed shortly thereafter. Kate smiled at them in the rearview mirror. They’d had a busy day. Hell, the entire week thus far had been crazy.
For some reason, there’d been a huge influx of people wanting to sign up for the household manners class. She and Sandy finally agreed on the need to split the class into three sections. As her business grew, Sandy would be faced with making a decision to either turn down potential clientele or hire another trainer or two. Either way, Kate was convinced dog training would take up the majority of her energies for a while. Fortunately the new sessions wouldn’t start for another month, so at least she had some time to prepare.
When Kate walked through the door, the smell of tomato sauce and basil made her mouth water. Her stomach clenched and growled. The dogs rushed past her and disappeared into the kitchen. Their nails clicked on the tile as they danced in excitement to see Faith.
“There they are!” Kate heard Faith exclaim. “I’ve missed you guys so much.”
Kate walked through, leaned a shoulder against the wall, and smiled, quietly watching the scene before her. Faith wore an apron over a yellow sleeveless shirt. She assumed the apron covered some shorts. For a moment Kate let her imagination run with an image of Faith naked beneath it. Stop it! Yes, she found Faith extremely attractive, increasingly so the more she got to know her. But she couldn’t let herself wander into new relationship territory. Trish had got her thinking about the what ifs of their circumstances. What if Trish really did miss her? What if what she said about wanting to make it work between them was true? What if she was still sleeping around?
“What did you two do with Kate?” Faith’s voice broke into her thoughts.
“I’m right here. Whatever you’re cooking smells so good it made me weak with hunger, and I collapsed against the wall.”
Faith put her hands on her hips.
